Summer School
Know-How / Show-How Summer School is an international program for creative thinking and design processes, which will be held from June 29 till July 10, 2015 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The program is meant to support the development of young emerging designers and creatives interested in working in interdisciplinary manner with international professionals, educators and experts from the european’s creative and educational community.
Through workshops, exhibitions, exploratory studies and lectures various questions and topics will be examined. How is our behavior shaped by our local environment? How to work together, and create a beneficial effect on society? Can we define a new role for artists and designers of the present and the future? A main objective of the project is to create an international network for collaboration between designers and other professionals, engaged with social and urban issues.
The program will be carried by a representative group of design and art professionals from all over Europe with extensive experience in education – Frans Oosterhof (NL), Lotte van Gelder (NL), Matthias Kreutze (D) & Jens Schildt (SE), Elisa van Joolen (NL), Ruby Hoette (AUS/NL), and Henk Groenendijk (NL). In close collaboration with local Bulgarian professionals and experts Creative shower, Transformatory Lab and Poststudio, the tutors will challenge the participants to think in a new way about the process of design.
What:
– 4 five-days workshops;–
1 one-day workshop in Design Thinking
;– 5 tutors from international Design and Art Academies (The Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam, The Royal Academy of Fine Arts The Hague, Goldsmith University of London and Konstfack University in Stockholm);–
12 days program with practical work, lectures and screenings, conversation, field trips and inspiration, creative atmosphere and presentations;
For Whom:
Аll non-conventional thinkers, authors, professionals or students, active in the field of design, graphic design, photography, illustration, publishing, fashion, performing arts, architecture, theoretical research to explore their creative potential in a multi-faceted way.
Each participant will be able to follow three workshops in total (2 of 5-days and 1 of 1-day in sequential order).
The spoken language will be English.
Where:
Transformatory Lab and Studio Projectirane will host the KHSH 2015 edition. The location is a satellite building Behind the Sofia University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy (bulevard “Hristo Smirnenski” 1, Sofia).
Tuition fee:
The tuition fee for participation is 200 euro (must be paid after the selection of the candidates).
It covers:– participation in 3 Workshops;– materials for the Workshops;– bread, water, coffee and tea;– two dinners, one lunch and one breakfast;– certificate for completing the program;– very inspiring atmosphere, field trips, Bulgarian spirit and more;
The travel cost, accommodation and food are not covered in the fee (the minimum expenses a day + acomodation in Bulgaria are 25 euro).

Over- and Undergrounds Signs – Learning from Sofia
tutors: Our Polite Society, 29 June – 03 July 2015
From specific traits and traces found in the city, a new type specimen will be developed and translated into print. The process of collecting (in the streets), redrawing (in the studio) and reproducing (in the printing workshop) will activate and visualise existing and new connections between spaces and people.
Previous versions of this workshop were conducted at Artez School of Arts and Design (Arnhem) and the REDO Design Biennial in Pristina.
The significance of Images

The city of Sofia is a living organism, a synergetic web of interconnected material and immaterial entities. It has a body and a soul, just like all of us. The city’s architecture and space raise gestures, language and movement. Together we will create a sensorial map of the city, applying the tools of cultural- and movement analysis. We will present our findings in an unpredictable nonetheless special way.
Tutors
Frans Oosterhof (NL) is a visual artist, designer, writer, publisher and teacher. In his work, he plays with the meaning of words and images. Parallel to his own practice, Oosterhof has been teaching over the course of some decades and headed several departments at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, and founded the department of Image and Language. During the ’60ies Oosterhof co-founded the independent art publishing house De Enschedese School, that distributed art editions to its members in an ideal to democratize art. His illustrations and a weekly visual column were published in various newspapers and magazines. Art pieces of Oosterhof are part of the municipal collections of Amsterdam, The Hague and Enschede.
Image and language
Jens Schildt (SE) and Matthias Kreutzer (D) are the graphic design duo Our Polite Society, which was founded in 2008 and based in the space between Amsterdam / The Netherlands and Stockholm / Sweden.
In close collaboration with their clients and with a focus on typography, structure and method, they design (typo)graphic identities, books, magazines, posters, exhibitions, record sleeves, (dingbats) fonts, websites and other forms of visual language.
Jens is currently teaching at Konstfack University in Stockholm, Matthias at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague.
Among their clients are Bauhaus Dessau for which they designed two issues of Bauhaus Magazine and other printed matter in 2012. They did the exhibition design for Prix de Rome Architecture 2014 in ‘Het Nieuwe Instituut’ Rotterdam and had a show of their independent work at the International Poster and Graphic Design Festival Chaumont 2014. Their work was recently acquired by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam for the museum’s design collection.
Parallel to their outstanding design practice they give workshops, lectures, presentations and talks internationally.

Elisa van Joolen (IT/NL) is an artist, designer and researcher based in Amsterdam.
Merging the analytical with a hands-on process Elisa’s work investigates the current fashion system exploring and proposing new models of production and presentation. Her approach to clothing design is characterised by strategies of intervention and reconfiguration. Her projects often reflect specific social contexts and emphasise collaboration and participation. They expose relational aspects of clothing and subvert processes of value production.
Elisa graduated Cum Laude from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam in 2006 and completed the MFA Fashion Design and Society at Parsons, New York City in 2012.
Her work has been recognized with a Fulbright Award (2010), the ILLY design prize (2008) and nominated for the Dutch Design Award (2013) and New Material Award (2014).
She participated in shows and exhibitions at the Arnhem Fashion Biennial, New York Fashion Week, Zendai Museum of Modern Art in Shanghai, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Casco – Office for Art, Design and Theory in Utrecht and Temporary Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
Elisa teaches at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and Goldsmiths, University of London.

Lotte van Gelder is influenced by hidden signs and meanings of language, movement and space.She works with ideas and concepts in contemporary society, such as future dreaming in architecture and literature, and translates them into shape.
Her work manifests itself in exhibitions, publications, teaching and performative installations.
Van Gelder is founder of RaumRaum, platform on architecture and movement. RaumRaum collaborates with international artists, choreographers and scientists.
RaumRaum performed at Wallhouse Groningen, Hejduk Towers Berlin and several locations in Brussels.
As an advisor and a creator, Van Gelder has (a.o.) worked for MOTI Museum of the Image, MUDAC Musée Lausanne, slowLab and Joke Robaard.
Van Gelder received The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture Mediator Grant in 2013 and presently lectures at Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam.

Ruby Hoette (AUS/NL) works as a designer/researcher/curator exploring fashion in context through the intersection of theory and practice. Her work reveals patterns of use and investigates the construction of value and meaning in fashion through collections of text, photography, clothing and interactive projects. These propose alternate modes of engaging with fashion by framing the garment as a unique artefact carrying traces of social and cultural interactions and transactions. Ruby is a Lecturer in Design (Fashion and Textiles) and convenor of the MA Fashion at Goldsmiths, University of London. This pioneering programme enables the combination of research, debate and ethics with making to cultivate new and inclusive ways of thinking, doing and being fashion. Ruby holds a BA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (NL) and an MFA from Parsons (USA).

A documentary that exposes the rich growing subculture of hip-hop that was developing in New York City in the late ’70s and early ’80s, specifically focusing on graffiti art and breakdancing.

7 p.m. – The World of Gilbert & George, lecture by Frans Oosterhof
In this lecture Frans Oostehof will present the artists Gilbert Prousch and George Passmore, who works as the collaborative duo called Gilbert & George. They are known for their distinctive and highly formal appearance and manner and also for their brightly coloured graphic-style photo-based artworks.
8 p.m. – Film screening: “Ways of seeing”, part 1, author John Burger (1972)
A BAFTA award-winning BBC series with John Berger, which rapidly became regarded as one of the most influential art programmes ever made. In the first episode, Berger examines the impact of photography on our appreciation of art from the past.
8:30 p.m. – Film screening: “Tokyo-Ga”, dir. Wim Wenders (1985)
“Tokyo-Ga” is a 1985 documentary film (shot in spring 1983) directed by Wim Wenders ostensibly about filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu. The film ranges from explicit focus on Ozu’s filmmaking—Wenders interviews Ozu’s regular cinematographer, Yuharu Atsuta, and one of Ozu’s favorite actors, Chishū Ryū—to scenes of contemporary Tokyo such as pachinko and plastic food displays. Wenders introduces the film as a “diary on film.”

Elisa and Ruby have a common interest in reshaping ideas around clothing, time, space and value. Through their individual practices they aim to document, analyze and understand the fluidity and diversity of fashion in a variety of ways. They will each present their perspectives and some collaborative projects.
8 p.m. – Identities and Symbolism in Bulgarian Costume Traditions, lecture by Yana Dvoretska
In this lecture Yana will analyze the general look and details of the Bulgarian traditional costume in the context of the ethnic, national and social identity. Like every traditional costume, the Bulgarian one is a complex construction of signs and symbols, which goes beyond its utilitarian value.

Wim Wenders talks with Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto about the creative process and ponders the relationship between cities, identity and the cinema in the digital age.

KHSH Summer school is a collaboration between 6 cultural and design enthusiasts from the Netherlands and Bulgaria. The team consists of Dima Stefanova, Henk Groendijk (Icecreamdesign), Bilyana Necheva (Culture Desk), Velina Syoykova, Andrian Nechev and Magdalina Stancheva(Poststudo).
Dima Stefanova is media designer and developer focused on new systems for dynamic content management and social interaction. She is the founder and director of Know-How Show-How social platform for local knowledge exchange. Henk Groenendijk is a graphic designer, researcher and educator. He is Professor at the “Gerrit Rietveld Academie” as well the founder and moderator of the Designblog an experimental platform for design research on academic level.
Bilyana Necheva is a cultural entrepreneur, manager and consultant. She is the co-founder and director of Culture Desk Foundation and editor in chief of the online platform for cultural management Let’s play culture. In 2014 she was a local partner for IETM София 2014.
Velina Stoykova, Andrian Nechev and Magdalina Stancheva are communication designers and curators. Together they are the authors of several visual identities among which the identities for Sofia Design Week, Muзeiko, IETM София 2014 and independent publications like ‘Visual Cut Bulgaria’ book and ‘Logo Book Stefan Kanchev’.
